Steve Capobres
Housing for Hope Founder/Executive Director

Steve Capobres, a native to Arizona, founded Housing for Hope from a lifelong passion to serve vulnerable families stemming from his early life experiences.

“I went into housing because of my interest in homelessness,” says Capobres. “As a child whose family fell on hard times, we basically became homeless and had to live with my grandparents. I know what it’s like to struggle without having a safe and secure home. I knew as a child, I wanted to help others have opportunities like those given to me to get out of homelessness with providing more affordable housing options.”

Capobres pursued his bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in public administration, both from Arizona State University, then spent 25 years serving in government and consulting positions for housing projects. Capobres reached a milestone in his career in 2001 when he helped to create the Arizona Department of Housing. At the time, Arizona was the only state in the nation not to have a housing finance authority.

“By creating this separate State agency, it gave Arizona the same authority as all states, the ability to leverage its resources to generate new money that could be used to produce more affordable housing,” says Capobres.

With that success under his belt, Capobres decided to join Catholic Charities Community Services as vice president of business development in 2011 to oversee the organization’s social entrepreneurial ventures and strategic planning. He also created Housing for Hope as a Catholic Charities affiliate non-profit.

In conjunction with his role at Catholic Charities, Capobres serves as executive director of Housing for Hope in the development and management of affordable housing. Through his leadership, hundreds of affordable apartments have been created or are being built to serve the vulnerable.

In addition to his passion for housing, Capobres and his wife, Jamie, are also licensed foster care parents with two biological daughters, Kacy and Christy.
